Pre-Session: Negative start likely for markets; L&T Q4 results eyed

Indian benchmark indices are expected to start the day in red on Friday as traders return to their terminals after a day's break. However, favourable global cues may help cushion the fall.

Besides, Covid-related updates, corporate results, and stock-specific developments will remain the other key triggers for the markets today. Investors may also react to macro numbers released on Wednesday post market hours. Meanwhile, WPI inflation for April is set to be declared later in the day.

On the result front, a total of 41 companies, including the likes of Larsen & Toubro, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Cipla, Aditya Birla Capital, Just Dial, and Mindspace Business Parks REIT are scheduled to release their quarterly results today.

On Wednesday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 48690.8 down by -471.01 points or by -0.96 % and then NSE Nifty was at 14696.5 down by -154.25 points or by -1.04 %.

On the global front, Wall Street ended sharply higher at the close of a broad rally on Thursday, bouncing back from three straight days of selling on upbeat labor market data. All three major U.S. stock indexes notched solid gains, with the S&P 500 enjoying its biggest percentage gain in over a month. Overall, the Dow Jones rose 1.29 per cent, the S&P 500 gained 1.22 per cent, and the Nasdaq added 0.72 per cent.

The trend was firm among Asian indices as well. Japan's Nikkei shot up 1.3 per cent, while South Korea's Kospi and Australia's ASX 200 traded over half a per cent up in early Friday trade.

Back home, Top traded Volumes on NSE Nifty – Tata Motors Ltd. 111584920.00, NTPC Ltd. 62158914.00, State Bank of India 53436590.00, Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. 49718697.00, Coal India Ltd. 42959024.00, On NSE, total number of shares traded was 56.20 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 85197.68 Crore.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 340686 with a total turnover of Rs. 32553.12 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 993426 with a total turnover of Rs. 78672.93 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 84050488 with a total turnover of Rs. 7703250.74 Crore. and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 2329246 with a total turnover of Rs. 192064.65 Crore.

The FIIs on 12/05/2021 stood as net buyer in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 7574.74 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 64.15 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 6858.82 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 242.33 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. 715.92 Crore and Rs. -178.18
